Palmer Perspective #6

Palmer Perspective September 2010

The school year has gotten off to a great start. Thanks to the support staff, teachers, and students, for making the beginning of this school year really smooth.
We have changed a few things this year, including STEP (Student Teacher Enrichment Program). STEP is right after lunch, between 5th and 6th hours. We also added 5 minutes to STEP making it 20 minutes long. During STEP, we have adopted a program called Drop Everything And Read.
I have a deep down, core belief that reading helps increase test scores. But there is more to my belief. I also believe there are far more AND better reasons that a person should read.
Benefits to reading are:
1.     It increases your vocabulary
2.     Improves concentration and focus
3.     Builds self-esteem
4.     Can reduce stress
5.     Makes you more intelligent
6.     Makes you use your brain
7.     Books provide information that goes deeper than just classroom discussion.
8.     Gives you a idea of what other cultures and places are like
9.     Improves your memory
10.Improves self-discipline
11.Books are portable. You can take them anywhere and LEARN
12.Gives you something to talk about
13.You can learn at your own pace
14.In reading a book to discover the solution to one problem, you find the solution to others you may not have considered.
15.Improves your reasoning skills
16.Builds your expertise
17.Can change your life
18.Can make you more qualified
19.Can make you more $$$
20.The book IS ALWAYS better than the movie

"Those who don't read have no advantage over those who can't."  Mark Twain
